It’s time for Story A Day May

Fifteen years ago (it surely hasn’t been that long since 2011), I did my first Story A Day May, a writing challenge with a story prompt each day for the month of May.

I’m pretty sure none of my asteroid mining stories will include a structure like this. (Photo by me, 2019, Cobalt, Ontario, Canada)

I loved it the first time I did it & I’ve done it most Mays since then. I don’t always follow the ‘rule’ of writing to the day’s prompt, but the prompt is provided as a suggestion. The point is to write.

In between work on a novel (there’s always a novel), my current short story in progress has an asteroid mining setting (is it a setting? theme? bit of world building? not really sure). And in getting to where I am with it, I discarded a few other asteroid mining-related story ideas.

Why asteroid mining? That’s a good question and I’ll probably say more about it as the month progresses, but it’s something I’ve thought a lot about it, mostly because my grandfather worked in mining for decades, around the world and I have a lot of thoughts about that. (My dad worked in mining long enough to be motivated to finish high school.)

So for this Story A Day May I thought, maybe a month of asteroid mining? It’s not going to be 31 stories, because I have other plans this May (like this class — and this con — and a race). But it will be 10, my own personal little anthology with an asteroid mining theme.

I have ideas for the stories, just a few words here and there. I don’t think they’ll all take place within the same universe, but maybe. It’s hard to say yet, before I’ve started.

I’ll update (really, I promise, I know I’m shit at updating this blog) as the month progresses.

(And look at that, it’s after midnight for me, so it’s May now.)

Take care.
